“Sabe Dios que angustia te acompañó…”
“God knows what anguish accompanied you, what old sorrows were muted in your voice…”
Alfonsina y el Mar is among the most popular Latin American songs of all time. It was released for the first time in 1969, immortalized by the unique voice of Mercedes Sosa.
It´s also a profoundly sad song.
The lyrics never fail to touch my heart and I´ve got to take care not to immerse myself too much in it… or else my mind is transported to a faraway land of deep sorrow.
Alfonsina Storni was a female poet from Argentina who, overcome by her own inner tragedy, committed suicide by throwing herself into the sea.
The song Alfonsina y el Mar, translated to Alfonsina and the Sea, is dedicated to her and is a prodigious fusion of music and poetry, painting a vivid picture immersed in oceanic fantasy.
I´ve released my own instrumental version of Alfonsina y el Mar today.
I recorded it in one go, first the bass line and then playing the bandoneon on top. It is, as usual for me, a very free semi-improvised version of this classic done in the spur of the moment. A unique and unrepeatable dash of inspiration, registered by the fidelity of my microphones.
You can listen to it by clicking right here. Yes, here.
I hope you enjoy it. If you don´t already know this beautiful song, I strongly suggest you go listen to a couple of versions other than mine as well. Mercedes Sosa´s recording could be one of them, for example.
Have a great day.
Claudio.
P.D. Here :)
