Three chords
“With three chords, I’m capable of making you feel much more things than with three hundred words.” - F.Mendelssohn.
Art differs from facts in the sense that facts can make us understand something, whereas art makes us empathize with it.
For example, we can look up information on tragic events, like wars, in the encyclopedia and comprehend how horrific they were.
But in just a few bars of his sixth piano sonata, Prokofiev can make us feel as if we were there, or Picasso can make us lose our breath to the atrocities of the Guernica.
On the other hand, we can look up the definition of love and understand the concept.
But in his first piano sonata, Schumann immerses us in the quest towards conquering an impossible love, or in just a few bars of his Romeo and Juliet overture, Tchaikovsky makes us youthfully fall in love once more.
Listen to the Romeo and Juliet overture (in my opinion one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed) at the top of my Classical playlist by clicking here.
Have a great day!
