The importance of taste
They say you are what you eat.
You are what you say.
You are what you ____ (insert anything… someone will probably have said it)
In reality, you are the sum of many things.
And I didn´t use to think of it this way, but as time passes I´m convinced that you are in fact: your taste.
That´s why it´s important to have good taste…
Let me explain.
Good taste is all about making choices that reflect who we are and what we appreciate.
As an artist, I see good taste as the ability to recognize beauty and quality, whether in a painting, a piece of music, or even the clothes we wear.
It’s not about following trends, but about finding what speaks to you personally.
When you have good taste, you naturally surround yourself with things that feel meaningful and special, adding richness to your everyday life.
But it’s not just about personal style—good taste also helps you connect with others. People notice when someone has an eye for what’s beautiful or well-crafted.
It shows that you’ve spent time thinking about what makes something stand out.
Whether you’re picking a painting for your wall or simply choosing how to express yourself, good taste helps you share a piece of who you are in a way that others can appreciate too.
In a masterclass, Ivo Pogorelich (legendary pianist) told a student something that marked me for life: “Taste is the road to perfection”.
First I was like… what??? I didn´t know what he was talking about.
But later, it all made sense.
It´s the performer´s taste that will lead him in the search for what he´s aiming for.
If his taste is impeccable, he/she will aim for impeccable.
If it´s not, the destination is mediocre.
So yes, taste is very important. You are your sense of taste.
Controversial opinion?
Maybe. A little bit. Who cares anyway? If you found it interesting enough to read until here, it was definitely worth writing :)
Have a great day,
Claudio.
