Surrealism
"Music is one of the most fantastic things there is, almost like fire, water, and air;
it's like, a thing.
And it does a lot.
It does something for the intellect, it does things for the emotions, and certain types of music can swell the heart until it almost bursts.
Tears of happiness flow out of your eyes.
You can´t believe the beauty that comes.”
These are simple, truthful words by the late David Lynch. In fact, if you watch his interviews and read his book, you find that he has a very simple and direct way of explaining things.
For the great surrealist that he was, it might come as a surprise.
Or, maybe not.
Perhaps it's this simplicity in expression that reveals the essence of his genius. For David Lynch, art—whether it's music, film, or painting—was never about overcomplication. It was about tapping into the raw, unfiltered truths that lie beneath the surface of our everyday lives.
His ability to articulate such profound ideas in plain language is a reminder that the most powerful experiences, like music, fire, or air, are universal and accessible. They transcend the boundaries of intellect and enter the realm of feeling, where words often fall short.
And maybe that's why Lynch's work resonates so deeply. His surreal worlds may be filled with shadows and mysteries, but at their heart, they reflect simple, undeniable truths about beauty, emotion, and connection.
So, the next time a piece of music moves you to tears or fills you with joy, remember Lynch’s words—and know that you’ve touched something elemental, something eternal.
Rest in peace, David Lynch. You´re among those few artists that I would really have liked to get to know, personally.
Now, I can only feel lucky to have lived during his lifetime.
Have a nice day,
Claudio.
