Practice, practice, practice
Charlie Parker once said: “Learn your instrument. Practice, practice, practice. Then forget all that and just wail.”
I’ve always loved that line. It sounds wild, almost reckless… but it’s actually true. Neuroscience backs it up: when we repeat something enough times, the brain builds deep pathways. What feels impossible at first eventually becomes automatic.
That’s really what Parker meant. You grind through the scales, you mess up, you try again — until one day your fingers know the music better than your head does. That’s when you stop “thinking” music and start living it.
And I find that comforting. Because it means the discipline and the joy aren’t opposites. They’re partners. One makes the other possible.
So yes: practice, practice, practice. But don’t forget to wail.
And if you’d like to hear me put this into practice, tickets for my 2026 solo tour are now on sale — you’ll find the link here.
Have a nice day,
Claudio.
