"The reality is life is a single-player game. You’re born alone. You’re going to die alone. All of your interpretations are alone. All your memories are alone. You’re gone in three generations and nobody cares. Before you showed up, nobody cared. It’s all single-player."
For this tweet, entrepreneur Naval Ravikant got quite a bit of feedback. Both good and bad, as it usually happens on that platform.
Today, I happened to listen to an episode of his podcast in which he addresses this quote and he talked about a concept that I´d like to share with you since I hadn´t thought about it in that way before.
While talking about this quote, he was asked by a listener of the podcast if there is a meaning at all to life. Naval came up with the following idea which I´ll express in my own words:
If there was a clear meaning to life, it´s likely that with all the great amount of effort put into solving that mystery, we would have come up with a conclusion by now, and therefore defined the absolute meaning of life.
If that were the case, this information would have been shared with everyone by now. And most likely, everyone would be working towards accomplishing whatever that meaning of life is.
But, that would create a whole new set of problems. What about the people who can´t achieve it for whatever reason? Would their life be meaningless?
What about the ones who do achieve it, what do they have to live for afterward?
In his opinion, life is much more interesting when there´s no meaning to it.
That means that each and every individual can live by their own meaning, and they all can be different from each other and coexist.
True, everyone might want to be happy. But happiness is no permanent state. Thus, it seems lacking to me to define happiness as the meaning of life. The same will happen with anything else.
There´s much to think about this thought pill, and as Naval himself said, philosophy is best experienced and understood alone. So if you found this interesting, probably you´ll be thinking about it today.
Have a great day.
Claudio.
