Lumiere
Erik Satie inspired generations of musicians.
Through the years, his music has influenced a wide variety of artists from different genres, not only classical.
To me, without intentions of delving into historically accurate facts, his music is as if written by someone who turned away from societal norms altogether. You can see what his influences might´ve been, here and there, but often I find this blurry, as if coming out of nowhere (as indeed happens in all geniuses who paved their own path).
One of the things I personally find brilliant about his work is that he invented words for many of his works and series of works, like the beloved Gnossienes and Gymnopedies, his most intimate and influential works.
In this spirit, I felt the urge to come up with new terms for a series of pieces I´ve recently composed and couldn´t find an appropriate title for.
There are two sets, the Noctilunes (something like a Nocturne, but not quite), and the Lumieres, which is not quite the same as the French word Lumière (meaning light), it is intentionally mispelled as to have a different meaning.
What is that meaning? Well… I´m still defining it. For now, it´s just a feeling. Something opposed to the Noctilunes.
The first two sets of Noctilunes and Lumieres will be included in my upcoming album, Fragile (out November 28th). And the third Lumiere was released last Friday.
In this link, you can see a video of me performing this third and last Lumiere.
In my own opinion, this is one of the best pieces I´ve ever written. Simple, yet luminous. But of course, that is not for me to decide.
Hope you enjoy it.
Have a nice day,
Claudio.
