What FOOD and MUSIC have in common
“Music is like preparing food.”
“… What? Why?” - I replied.
I didn´t get it at first, but then this guy told me:
The amount of knowledge, effort, and time it takes to create an amazing plate, one that will make a lasting impression on you (and your mouth), is disproportionate in relation to the amount of time and effort it takes for you to eat it.
It might take one, two, three, or more hours to prepare a memorable meal. And it might take you 10 minutes to finish it.
It’s very disproportionate.
Similarly, a musical concert might normally last about 60 to 90 minutes. But the performers of that concert might have been preparing for months before the recital.
That’s not even taking into account the number of years it takes to be able to give a concert. Some started studying when they were as young as 3 years old…
Then I understood it. And I also understood what top chefs and top musicians have in common:
A commitment to nothing but excellence.
That’s why top chefs will take care of even the slightest of details and prepare everything with exquisite care. From handpicking the right produce to controlling specific cooking times and temperatures.
And that’s why top musicians will always try to perfect their craft and get to the deepest possible state of musical/technical perfection, in hopes of producing that magical moment that might (or might not) appear on stage.
Both of them know that perfection is not attainable. Nevertheless, they both aim for it.
Their journey is towards a utopic, non-existing perfection.
However, what to me does seem like perfection are some musical pieces by some composers.
Like this one: La Fille Aux Cheveux de Lin
I hope you enjoy that beautiful piano piece from one of my dearest albums.
Have a great day.
Claudio.
P.D. Enjoy a great meal and some great music
