Filling the Void

I’ve always found meditation difficult.

For a long time, I practiced transcendental meditation (I was introduced to it by David Lynch), searching for that elusive state of stillness, but my mind has a way of slipping through the cracks of silence, filling the void with movement and sound.

Sitting still, emptying my thoughts—it never felt natural. But then, I realized something: perhaps I’ve always been meditating, just in a different way.

For musicians, sometimes music becomes the meditation. It’s the act of focusing completely on the moment, letting sound unfold without force, following where it leads rather than controlling it.

Improvisation, especially, is like stepping into a current—you surrender to something larger, something intangible.

And in that space, time softens, the mind quiets, and the music listens back.

I had one of these moments recently, just me and my bandoneón in my home studio, letting the sound take shape as it wished.

If you’d like to step into that space with me, I recorded it: Café-Music Meditation Nr.1. You can find it here.

Enjoy, and have a great day.

Claudio.
