Existencial Pickiness
A couple of days ago, as I was entering the venue for my concert that night, a man greeted me at the entrance. He said hello, and asked me a simple question: “Who are you?”
I replied: “I´m Claudio Constantini, the musician performing here tonight.”
That was enough information for him to let me in.
But, his simple question got me thinking. Before I knew it, I was going down a spiral of thoughts that led me into a series of existential doubts.
It might sound silly to you, but well, welcome to my life…
When asked who you are, typically one responds, just like I did, with your name.
The problem is, that´s not really you.
That´s only two words, a first name (Claudio) and a last name (Constantini), assigned to you by your parents at birth.
Your body isn´t you either. They´re just parts you control, but if you lose some of your body parts, whatever remains is still you. You would never say “I am leg”. You would say, “My leg”. My head, my hands, my body, my name. They´re all yours. But they´re not you.
So, who are you?
This is a profound question that requires introspection.
I believe that understanding ourselves involves recognizing that we exist on three different levels: spiritual, intellectual, and physical.
However, due to a lack of self-awareness, many of us are confined to a physical world, and we let things outside of us control us and dictate our lives.
Most people are reacting to life, instead of living.
After giving much thought to all of this, I proceeded to perform my concert in which I played some of the most beautiful music ever composed, most of it by Bach.
And on the ride back home, I gave it some more thought.
I´m still on the way to figuring out who I am. I´m that much closer…
Have a nice day,
Claudio.
