The desire for art
Art exists for many reasons.
But, there is one characteristic that is found in all art: the desire to express something.
Something from the experience of the human who is producing that art.
In this sense, art can be seen as a way of communicating their internal world with others.
This can be done through accurate description, or using fantasy.
In this way, we can “visit” the minds and feelings of other people through what they´re expressing in their art.
But, and this is a very important detail, people are not always their art.
David Lynch says, very accurately, that you don´t need to be a violent person to portray violence in a film.
My piano teacher, Aquiles Delle Vigne, told me once that the purpose of music is not for it to be beautiful, but to portray reality through the human eyes.
Sometimes, it´s beautiful. Sometimes, it´s ugly.
Sometimes, it might even hurt our feelings.
That´s a risk we should be willing to take in order for there to be art.
Have a great day,
Claudio.
