Composing "Classical" in 2024
It seems almost absurd to think about composing music in a style that was in fashion 300 years ago.
Or does it?
After all, millions worldwide enjoy music composed 100, 200, 300 years old or more, every single day.
Composing baroque-style music in 2024 might seem unconventional, but it offers a wealth of creative and intellectual rewards.
It allows musicians to explore the rich tapestry of counterpoint and harmony that characterizes this era.
It´s also an exercise in mastering complexity and creating music that resonates with the human experience in a timeless way.
The discipline required to compose Baroque music demands a high level of precision and creativity, challenging composers to think deeply about musical structure and expression.
Besides, there is a dedicated audience that appreciates baroque music for its elegance and complexity.
Offering them new works that speak to their tastes while expanding the repertoire for my instrument, the bandoneon, is one of my motivations for writing “Antigua”, a suite in 6 parts inspired greatly by the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and other baroque masters.
I´ve just uploaded a full performance of the complete suite on my YouTube channel which you can watch here.
Enjoy, and have a great day!
Claudio.
P.D. For the musicians amongst you who are up for the challenge, the sheet music is available for download. The link is on the video´s description.
