Change
I have to see a thing a thousand times before I see it once.
And the older I get, the truer this quote gets.
In music, this is constant. There´s always a new discovery to be made in musical works that one feels familiar with. But once you hear them or appreciate them in a new light, they come to life in ever-changing ways.
Maybe because you acquire the same life experience as that composer had when or after composing the piece… falling in love, a marriage, having children, separation, divorce, losing a loved one, feeling happy, feeling sad…
Until you don´t experience those things, you might see them all around you but you can´t really feel them as your own. You can only empathize and imagine it, or pass.
The initial quote, which is by Thomas Wolfe, reminds me of the beautiful Passacaglia by Haendel, a composer whose music I adore. I´ve recorded and uploaded a video fragment of it that you can listen to here.
Why does it remind me of that piece? God knows… maybe because it´s constantly repeating a musical pattern but with slight variations all the time, shedding some new light on the same old thing…
So, my unsolicited advice for today is to live with your eyes open to new things, even coming perhaps from things you already know.
And, have a great day :)
Claudio.
