How to begin
Do you need to know about music to be able to enjoy it?
The answer would, of course, be a resounding no.
I don´t know much about many things but can still enjoy them and even recognize the greatness in them.
However, some familiarity and predisposition is necessary.
If you´re not into wine, it´s quite likely you won´t be able to differentiate the fine differences between a cabernet and a merlot.
Also, if you happen to try wine for the first time and you like it, it´s quite likely you won´t be able to differentiate between these two grape types either. But you might know which one you like best.
Same as listening to Beethoven and Bach. You might not be able to point out the differences exactly, but you will be able to feel them. And it´s likely you will enjoy one more than the other because it speaks to you more directly.
In any case, the more you´re used to it, the more you´ll be able to differentiate the elements within. This might help you to appreciate details which otherwise might be hidden to you.
So, in music as in with anything you happen to like, my suggestion is always to consume and inform yourself as much as it as possible in it. Let yourself be obsessed. There´s nothing wrong with it when it´s for a good cause. I know I wouldn’t be half the musician I am if I weren´t as obsessed with music as I am.
Needless to say, I don´t recommend it with things that are detrimental to you or to others…
If you´re not that familiar with classical music and would like a place to start, here is a playlist I created. It´s not exactly “easy listening”, but it contains some of the works that are among the most beautiful to me. Click here.
Enjoy, and have a great day!
Claudio.
